Automobiles – The Ultimate Smartphone?

Over the last decade or two, there has been a push towards turning ‘dumb’ electronics into ‘smart’ technology. Smart PHONES, smart APPLIANCES. What if your fridge could detect that it was out of milk and send you an email at work telling you to pick some up? What if your phone could see who was calling you and block some numbers while allowing others through?

One of the most interesting marriages of ‘smart’ technology and ‘dumb’ electronic appliances is that of the common automobile. Let’s think about several different technological elements coming together as you sit behind the wheel.

Most new models produced today have an available GPS system inset in the dashboard. What if the automobile could detect that it was in motion and disallowed you from programming the GPS with your hands while en route to a destination? With voice recognition technology, you could speak to the GPS computer giving it the new destination without ever moving hands from their rightful place on the steering wheel.

Or, what about if the ‘smart’ car could detect that the driver had a BlueTooth enabled cell phone and automatically routed any cell calls through the automobile’s sound system? Taking that one step further, what if the driver’s cell phone contacts were made available to the onboard computer so that they could tell the ‘smart’ car to look up a contact and dial that number?

What if the driver’s BlueTooth cell phone was detected and disallowed from sending text messages while the car was mobile?

Would drivers be safer if they didn’t have these distractions to divert their attention? Would this lead to a whole new industry of ‘car hacking’ taking the technologically savvy out of their apartments and into their garages?

One thing is certain: the evolution of the ‘smart’ car is just the beginning. There are applications for this technology that haven’t even been thought of yet.
