Choosing memory cards for digital cameras is not as easy as it looks. The memory card should be able to accommodate the number of images you click and it should retain it with the highest quality. Most digi-cameras store data on memory cards.

A memory card is also called as flash card. It is an electronic device capable of storing data. Memory cards are multi-purpose storage utilities and can be used in mobile phones and other handheld devices as well. They are the size of a stamp, and portable with the ability to store data without the need of powering it up.

The images from the memory card are transferred to a laptop or computer through cables. A card reader can also do this job. The memory card is inserted into the card reader. The card reader is a USB device that attaches to the computer, and the transfer takes place. More than a cable, memory card readers are better, as they offer quicker downloads of data from the memory card to the computer.  Now to understand the amount of storage you need on your memory card, you need to understand the pixel-strength of your camera. It also comes down to how your camera stores digital images shot from it. JPEG image formats take lesser storage space as they employ compression mechanisms.

So the trick is to use lower megabyte memory card for lower megapixel cameras and vice versa. A minimum of 1MB is needed when choosing a memory card for a digital camera. You will also need to check the memory card supported by your camera. Check your camera’s product literature on this. Though there is a variety of memory cards from different brands, your camera might support only some or many of them.

Cameras nowadays do not come with memory cards. Even if they did, it would not be sufficient for your personal needs. So you might want to buy another memory card.
